Winter engagement sessions are seriously magical. Imagine being surrounded by snow and snuggling up with your man—or, in my case, in California, it’s rainy and perfect cuddling weather! It is like living out a Hallmark Christmas movie! As a Sacramento wedding photographer, I’m so lucky to spend time with some of the most beautiful people, capturing their love stories. We’re fortunate to have great weather throughout the year, especially in the winter. While planning your winter engagement session outfit, consider the weather, the location, and, most importantly, what makes you both feel good. Throughout the blog, I’ll share my quick tips to help plan your winter engagement photo outfits and ensure you feel confident and beautiful for your photos.
Layers are the easiest way to add depth and texture to winter engagement photo outfits. Consider adding scarves, jackets, and sweaters to your outfits throughout your planning. It’s a great way to add more color and variety to your photos! As a photographer, adding layers is one of my favorite tips to share with clients to make photos feel warm and cozy and allow you to feel confident in all the fun winter accessories. Add outdoor coats and scarves to mix textures and create a visually appealing look and look like a babe in your photos! When the outside world looks a little gloomy, especially in winter, embracing seasonal colors is a great way to brighten up your photos. I’m not just talking about green and red for the holidays. Opt for colors like deep greens, burgundy, and navy or neutral tones like cream, gray, and beige. Incorporating these colors will create a cohesive look and enhance the location. Just because it’s winter in California doesn’t mean we can’t pretend we’re in the snow and embrace the season!
As mentioned, I don’t see much snow as a Sacramento wedding photographer. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy all the fun winter fashion. Accessories are a simple way to enhance an overall look while providing practical warmth in cooler weather. Consider adding warm beanies, gloves, or a scarf. These can add some much-needed pops of color and texture to your outfit and pop on the camera! Remember to ensure the accessories add to the outfit rather than overpower it. We want you and your partner to be the star of the show, not your puffy coat or knit scarf!
Before choosing your shoes for your winter engagement photo outfits, ask your photographer about the location. Winter weather can be unpredictable, and it’s crucial to be prepared for slick sidewalks or wet locations. Throughout your preparation, prioritize stylish yet practical shoes, such as warm and cute boots. While high heels are both fashionable and timeless, it may be challenging to walk in winter weather conditions. Work with your Sacramento wedding photographer to find a location that works for your vision but will also stand out in photos.
Lastly, coordinate the outfits when planning photos with more than just yourself. There’s nothing worse than having everyone show up in the same black shirt and blending in photos. Coordinating colors is a timeless trend that will always look great in photos and will be easier to plan! You’ll be able to find something you both feel confident in and probably wear again in the future. Choose complementary colors and styles that reflect each person’s personality. For example, if one partner wears a plaid shirt, the other might wear a solid color that picks up one of the shades in the plaid.
My favorite coordinating colors are forest green and cream, navy blue and burgundy, and plum and charcoal. Not only will they stand out in winter engagement photos, but they’ll also look great on you and your partner!
